Visual Perception Test in Hemiplegia

Abstract
The success of rehabiliation therapy for the patient with hemiplegia often depends more on patient¢¥s mental status and perceptual abilities than on motor function itself.
The author investigated perceptual deficit with Ayres Space Test and Figure Ground Visual Perception Test for 14 hemiplegic patients ranging from 21 to 61 years old (mean age 43.9 yrs) according to the side of hemispheric lesion, aphasia, visual field defect and severity of disability depended on ADL and ambulation.
Only right handed subjects were included and left handed subjects, bedridden, clouded consciousness, below 10 years old cases and severe intellectual deficit which is not sufficient in test were excluded.
The results were as follows:
1. Mean scores (age levels) of Ayres Space Test of 8 left hemispheric lesion without aphasia, 3 left hemispheric with aphasia and 6 right hemispheric lesion were 47.88(8.52), 24.67(4.47) and 36.17(7.05), respectively.
2. Mean scores (age levels) of Figure Ground Visual Perception Test of above ,1 group was
20.57(9.23), 13.33(6.32), and 16.00(9.00), respectively.
3. Mean scores of Ayres Space Test and Figure Ground Visual Perception Test in mild,
moderate and severe was 46.43, 39.28, 24.67 and 21.57, 14.83, 13.33, respectively.
4. Significant difference between left hemispheric without aphsia and with aphasia, and
between left hemispheric without aphasia and right hemispheric group was found in Ayres.
Space Test.
5. Correlation Coefficiency between Ayres Space Test and Figure Ground Visual Perception. Test were 0.5974 in score and 0.6535 in age level.
